Walking routes from Lane Head Barns

Moorland straight off the doorstep, and some of the Peak District's best-known landmarks within a short drive. Routes for a gentle afternoon, and routes that'll earn your dinner.

On foot

Close by there are famous spots like Dovedale, the Manifold Valley — including Thor's Cave — Three Shires Head, Chrome Hill and The Roaches, and further afield there are many more Peak District routes to explore. Just outside the park boundary to the south is the beautiful Churnet Valley, with walks alongside the Caldon Canal.

Footpaths, bridle paths and old railway lines mean there's something for every ability, including relaxing valley-bottom walks and former railway lines suitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs.

By bike

If you'd rather explore on two wheels, there are leisurely rides along former railway lines as well as more challenging routes with genuinely famous climbs — Winnats Pass, Cat & Fiddle and Gun Hill among them.

If you bring your own bikes, we can store them securely in the lockable garage. If you'd rather hire, the National Park's own Cycle Hire centres and the Monsal Trail hire centre are both options, and True North Adventures offer E-Bike and mountain bike hire with guided experiences if you want something more adventurous.

By water

Tittesworth Water and Rudyard Lake are both good for a walk around the water, and Tittesworth Water Sports runs activities if you want to get out onto it rather than just around it.

Climbing & riding

For climbers, the gritstone crags of The Roaches are one of the best-known spots in the area. For younger riders, Beaver Hall Equestrian Centre offers pony rides, and Northfield Farm Riding and Trekking Centre runs treks across old pack horse trails.
